Water lilies up close are among my favorite subjects to paint. I remember, as a young girl, peering over the bow of the rowboat when the fish weren’t biting. I would get lost in the jewel-like layers. I have always loved to study the gradual, almost unperceivable transition between the reflection of the blue sky and surface of the water. For me it begs the question ‘Where does the blue of the sky end?’ and ‘What is real and what is reflection?’. I start to daydream about these connections to the natural world and my place within it all. ~Mary
