"Sunset after the Murmuration" is a painting done en plein air over several sessions on Brighton Pier, UK back in January 2026. The work presents a personal and honest view from the pier towards the skyline of Brighton, bathed in the warm early-evening light of a winter's day in January. Through close observation, the painting captures the subtle shifts of atmosphere, colour and light across the city and sea from the point of view from the railings of the pier. Balancing architectural structure with the fleeting qualities of nature, the work reflects on the quiet beauty of everyday moments and the relationship between the built environment, the landscape and the changing light of the season. This view holds huge personal sentimental value to myself as we bring our son to Brighton Pier a lot during his early years. I hope this painting speak to many who have travelled to Brighton.
Prior to producing this painting, i have done numerous sketches and colour studies. This painting is medium in sized, and painting on site through 4 sessions at a specific time of 4.30 - 5pm in January. The painting was drafted out with raw umbre, following that application of oil paint were applied with no medium used. I rarely use any mediums in my paintings. The colours used were a controlled limited palette to bring cohesiveness to the painting using hog brushes of different sizes and palette knife.
