This painting embodies the biblical verse: "And Michal, Saul’s daughter, looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart" (2 Samuel). This pivotal moment captures the deep rift in Michal’s identity—torn between the rigid, royal restraint of her father's dynasty (King Saul) and the stormy, ecstatic devotion of her husband (David). This universal conflict invites every woman to reflect on the delicate tension between the heritage of her parents' home and the legacy of the home she builds for herself. In this artwork, I navigated a delicate balance: my profound desire to create an emotionally resonant figurative piece, weighed against my strict adherence to Jewish religious tradition, which discourages the literal visual depiction of sacred biblical figures. By portraying Michal from behind and without a face, she is simultaneously present and hidden—"painted yet unpainted." In her anonymity, she transcends history to become a mirror for the human soul. This piece is part of my series "Waymarks" (which is also accompanied by a book), depicting iconic women of the Hebrew Bible. The paintings intentionally avoid detailed physical forms to ensure the viewer's focus remains entirely on the emotional and spiritual essence. This body of work closely accompanied my own spiritual evolution and inner journey during years of coping with a severe illness.
