Saint Matthew (3:13-17), Jesus went from Galilee to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. Although it was called baptism, it did not have the sacramental value of the rite we celebrate today. As you know, with his death and resurrection, Jesus instituted the sacraments and brought the Church into being...The baptism administered by John was a penitential act, a gesture that invited humility before God, a new beginning: by immersing himself in the water, the penitent acknowledged his sin, implored God for the purification of his guilt, and was sent forth to change his wrongdoings, almost as if he died in the water and rose again to a new life. Pope Benedicta XVII was listening "Por amor".
