Entry 3:"Post-Industrial preening", 2023, Oil on stretched linen, 107 x 56 cm (42 x 22 inch).White-breasted wood swallows (Artamus leucorynchus), are chunky little birds characterised by broad, triangular wings and short, decurved bill. While they typically roost high in trees or huddled together on utility wires, these wood swallows had favoured some large abandoned industrial equipment in an old quarry. The painting depicts their typical preening behaviour and social nature. The rusted metal is in stark contrast to the bright, almost white, humid sky of Far North Queensland where these birds were observed. A contrast synonymous with the strongly contrasting markings of the White-breasted wood swallows. In going about their preening behaviour, the birds offer a living relief between the stark white sky and the harsh, decaying industrial past.
