The vision for this painting came to me in a waking dream. I staged the photo for it on the rocky shoreline near where I live in Ontario, Canada. For me, the shoreline represents a liminal or threshold space of transition between land and water. The eggs in the sterling silver bowl are made from marble. For me, eggs are symbols of transition and new beginnings, and dark brown or black eggs represent a primordial source of potential. They are presented to the viewer as though they are a reflection of the viewer's innate capacities, inviting them to choose one or two. In fact, if you look up into the glossy surface of the eggs, you might be surprised! The bowl reflects the rocky shoreline and white napkin, and all subjects are backlit by the rising morning sun - the promise of a new day.

T. (Tanya) Markvart is a Canadian artist based in the north Georgian Bay area of Ontario. She studied Fine Arts at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, before earning a Masters and Doctorate in Environmental Studies and Planning from the University of Waterloo, Ontario. Her artistic lineage is rooted in her Dutch and Czech heritage.
My work moves between abstract realism and still life to illuminate the mysteries of the heart and mind. I'm excited to paint images that appear in my dreams, so I'm most inspired by the visual language of my subconscious. This internal source is informed by my interests in symbols, psychology, and philosophy. I begin with staged compositions and photography as the basis for working in acrylic ink on birch panels. I love to allow the wood grain to emerge through the medium in surprising ways. This interplay between the wood grain and layers of transparent acrylic ink gives my work a distinctive effect that defines my painterly signature.
